1. INTRODUCTION

Creating a screen career is not just about developing camera skills but also marketing, marketing, MARKETING (!) yourself. Whilst most working actors are competent at the first, not so many are comfortable with the second! It’s a shame that too many really excellent and inspiring actors don’t reach their full potential through lack of marketing skills, and it is to meet the sobering challenges of networking and showreels that this one-day workshop is devoted.

The strategies taught are those covered on the acclaimed 5-day ‘Alchemy of Screen Acting’ workshop, many participants of which have gone on to kick-start screen careers. To check out some of their professional screen credits, click here.

However, because attending the 5-day workshop may not be appropriate or convenient for everyone, it is felt that the urgent need for marketing skills necessitates the offering of this vital information on a shorter one-day workshop.

2. ’HOW TO SELL YOURSELF AS A SCREEN ACTOR': Saturday 20 September 2008

The workshop is led by experienced TV director, Andrew Higgs, who offers a practical strategy for kick-starting a screen career; a wealth of information accumulated over nearly twenty years working as a freelance director.

Topics covered will include:

• The three unique elements which make TV/film so difficult to get into, and how to overcome them

• How to watch TV/film with a view to working in the screen business

• Typecasting and how to use it to your advantage

• Vital relationships which need to be cultivated

• The three essential marketing tools any actor needs to break into screen work

• How to get the right screen agent

• What you need to know about screen auditions

• Where to access information about screen work

• Successful strategies for networking in the TV/film business

• How to get your showreel seen by the right people

• Self belief and how to cultivate it

The workshop will include screenings of numerous showreels (both good and bad), showing what can be achieved even without broadcast drama credits, and there will be handouts offering participants a practical way forward to create an effective job-winning marketing strategy for themselves.

If your marketing skills are poor or non-existent, or you believe that you can have a screen career by letting your agent organise everything for you, then this is your wake-up call!

The venue will be in South Kensington, London, SW7.

He recently set up Macheath Productions and is in development with a first feature film. He is also a member of the current Council of The Directors Guild of Great Britain and was one of only three people granted an interview by Roman Polanski to discuss his Oscar-winning film 'The Pianist' (see www.dggb.co.uk/publications/article11_100.html).
